Chase dumping former WaMu card holders

Posted: Friday, July 31 2009 at 01:22 am CT by Bob Sullivan

Steven Lobdell points out an image on Chase bank's Web site that says "Welcome WaMu customers. We're here for you."

But, apparently not for him. Lobdell is one of a group of former Washington Mutual credit card customers who were abruptly dumped by Chase in recent days. He holds two Chase cards; both were canceled as of July 15.

"It's kind of ironic, isn't it?" he said. "I think Chase is two-faced....We were good enough for Washington Mutual, why not good enough for Chase?" Across the Internet, thousands of former WaMu customers are expressing the same outrage. They say Chase is dumping them as customers, despite their solid payment records.

JP Morgan Chase & Co. acquired Washington Mutual and its troubled portfolio of credit cards in September, at the height of the banking system collapse. While Chase has recently set about to tidy up the ranks of its credit card holders, consumers are bearing the brunt of the cleaning. Two weeks ago, Chase began forcing some customers to raise their minimum monthly payments from 2 to 5 percent. And now, it's cutting off some customers all together. Thousands of complaints from former Washington Mutual customers can be found on personal finance blogs all across the Web.

Lobdell took a long and winding road to become a Chase customer. He initially opened his credit card with Providian Bank, which was later acquired by Washington Mutual in 2005, which collapsed last fall, and Chase picked up the pieces.

Lobdell, who had combined balances on the two cards of about $3,000, says he's never been late with a payment and doesn't understand why Chase would cut him off.

"When I got the letter I called to ask why the account was closed, I was told it was because of information received from the Experian credit bureau," he said. When he looked at his credit report, nothing seemed out of order. Lobdell said he will be allowed to pay off the card at its current rate, but can no longer make charges with it.

24 percent default rate predicted
Chase officials refused to comment specifically about the complaints from former Washington Mutual customers. Spokeswoman Stephanie Jacobson would not say how many card holders were impacted by this latest round of notices, but instead offered only a generic statement saying the bank was reacting to market conditions and new regulations from Congress.

"As a responsible, careful lender, we constantly evaluate the risks and costs of funding credit card loans. We are also evaluating changes required due to pending regulations," she said. "When necessary, we make changes to pricing, terms or credit lines based on borrower risk, market conditions and the costs to us of making loans. These are factors we have always monitored and processes we have consistently followed."

For additional questions, she referred reporters to the company's quarterly statements.

Washington Mutual was one of the nation's top 10 card issuers when acquired by Chase, with about 15 million cards. Still, its operations were dwarfed by the nation's largest issuers, including Chase. Former Washington Mutual consumers have about $25 billion in outstanding credit card loans, compared to Chase's $150 billion.

Lobdell was sure that Washington Mutual customers were being targeted. The letter he received contained the cryptic label "WaMuClosure1" at the bottom of the note.

He's seen notes from hundreds of other consumers in the same spot. "Reading these same stories, over and over, makes one wonder how Chase can get away with this.”

A possible reason that Chase would pick on WaMu customers is contained in the company's second-quarter earnings announcement. While Chase said it anticipated losses of about 10 percent on its credit card portfolio, it predicted losses of up to 24 percent from its former Washington Mutual customers. Prior to its collapse, Washington Mutual targeted subprime borrowers, a group that’s more likely to default on loans.

Losses of that size would be a shock to Chase's balance sheet. When Chase acquired Washington Mutual's assets for $1.9 billion last fall, it said it anticipated credit card losses in the 8 percent range.

Lobdell holds other credit cards, so the cancellation does not put him in immediate dire straits. It will mess with his credit report for years to come, however. It now contains two notations that indicate "account closed at creditor's request." He'll get two dings to his credit score because his available credit has shrunk.

"Now if I try to get a car loan, it's going to show they closed my accounts," he said.

FICO: Not a negative event
Craig Watts, spokesman for Fair Isaac Corp. – which controls the credit formula – offered soothing words for Lobdell and others in his same spot. Watts says the “closed at creditor’s request” notation is not considered a negative event by the credit score formula.

“We see it as the same as if the consumer closed the account,” Watts said. In other words, it will not hurt credit scores the same way an account labeled “delinquent” or “settled for less than full balance.”

Of course, consumers are advised never to close their credit card accounts, because the loss of overall available credit will hurt their scores – and in this case, consumers have no choice in the matter. So consumers who’ve had their accounts closed by Chase will see their scores lowered. It’s impossible to say by how much, because multiple factors contribute to the score, Watts said.

To make matters worse, if consumers cut loose by Chase open a new card to replace their lost Chase card, that’ll hurt their credit score, too. * “If you go apply for a card, the impact to your credit score is you will lower your score a little bit, but over several months, it will recover,” Watts said. His advice to former Chase customers: pay off existing balances instead, and wait to open a new card, if possible. Consumers who are really worried about the impact of losing their Chase account should pay to get their credit score, he advised.

Lobdell didn’t have his score before Chase dumped him so he really has no way of knowing what impact it might have on him, or the price he may pay for credit in the future. But there is good news for him -- he bought a home two years ago, so at least he doesn't figure to be in the market for a home loan any time soon. His mortgage holder? JP Morgan Chase.

I received two letters from chase bank saying here’s some checks with a limit of 10,800.00 use them to pay off your debt so I decided to use one of the checks at 0% interest to pay my debts after I deposited the check they sent me a letter saying they lowered my limit to 500.00 and now I am over the limit and bounced a check this is not right!!! I will not be victim of Chase Banks deceptive, and unfair business practices!

I don’t think this will look good in court Chase vs. Widow!

I am not the only one other Chase credit card users report that their cards are being unexpectedly canceled and or the terms are being contradictorily changed one day they send you a check and the next they cancel your card.

I AM CLOSING ALL MY ACCOUNTS WITH CHASE BANK. THE NEXT STEP IS PEOPLE VS CHASE BANK! And trust me after reading the comments of outraged customers online I have faith the People will win! Here‘s a just a few outraged customers there are many more.

I also had a Providian card, aproximatly 3000.00 balance, was making double payments to pay it off completly. I called them in June of 2009 asking what the pay off would be if I paid it off all at once.

The person with Providian(now Chase) said... "where are you going to get the money to pay it off? I said,

It's none of your business! Two weeks later Iwas cancelled out. I sent a letter to Chase. They responded about Expirian. Now Ihave a 2500.00 balance, and can't use the fucking card.

What a scam these people are.

I had a wamu credit card of $1000 limit. After Chase took over,it got canceled. They cliamed that they send me a letter.I never recieved one...I paid that off and have overpaid $4.57.Since the card was closed in July'09,and now is the end of october'09.all this time they send me statements that I have available credit of $1000.After I called, and asked what is really going on,customer service person(VERY NASTY),answered my questions very quick,NOT profecional at all.No recpect, and at the end they hung up.I am getting financialy better and better, and in the future CHASE will never be my bank.I hope somebody will find a way to give CHASE BANK PAY BACK lawsuit...Can anybody see, that whatever they are doing somehow it seems very wrong!!!

I'm going to come back to the bailout. Why did we give the banks all that money to bail them out and keep them afloat because consumers were mired in debt and not able to pay those debts. granted, we as consumers did it to ourselves. But heres the kicker. The banks got that bailout money from OUR TAXES, as the government is theoretically a non-profit orginization. Let me reiterate. OUR TAXES paid for that bail out. Wouldn't it have made more sense for the Government to bailout the people? Set up a fund and access cards for those who request it with a statement of debt and its creditors. At that point a "debit card" could have been issued to thosed debtors in order to pay for specific debts to specific banks with a capped amount. what happens then.. the banks get the money, and the People get a good start (if not go completely) of geting out of that debt. In effect, credit scores go up, people start buying, which in turn helps the economy. we have GOT to stop being sheeple and start getting damned mad that OUR government which WE elect is not, in fact, looking out for its voters, but is looking out for the corporations. this is just another step in the way of corporate government. It is up to US to stop it. Thomas Jefferson said that this country needs a revolution every 20 years. well, I think its time for an economic revolution. we as a people need to take control of our money, and the way it's handled. If we can't be responsible enough to do that... this is what we end up with. Baa

My wife and I both had Wamu Cards in good standing, no lates or any derogatory things,I always paid way more than the Minimum....Chase took them over then they first upped the APR, then informed both of us that the the accounts were cancelled, now it is like a domino theory, since this has happened I now receive monthly letters from other creditors that I'm a bad credit risk so they are lowering my credit line, even on accounts that are a zero balance.
I did not want any of these bastards to get any TARP funds, they all should have failed and let the cards lay where they may.I am just about to the point I don't give a S*** about my credit score and stop paying any CC and live with no credit.

Your legislators are the fault of credit card companies now closing credit card accounts and fixed rate credit cards becoming adjustable rate credit cards. The reason for this is because banks are having to keep interest rates low for people who are in trouble with their credit. Now I can understand that the banks are losing money on higher risk customers, but I also look at this being as being a greedy paractice too. It is no ones fault when a person losses their job involuntary. Banks should work with these people that have lost there jobs, its just a good way to do business. Banks should not raise the interest rates a defaulted loans, this only results in the loan never being paid back. In turn we all pay for this now because of the new recent legislation. This new legislation will result in higher rates for all and less people using credit. The real losers will be the economy, business, banks, and all of us. You cant real blame your legislator for this, since you elected them in the first place. We can all do ourselves a favor by not voting down party lines and electing independents and average citizens instead. Vote for the person not the party! Most average citizens would be able to do a better job running our country than these career politicians will. Also, remember this as well, politicians are like traveling Carnie's, when a politician losses his/her job they will move to another area and run again in that new area. Our founding fathers never meant for our country be run by lifetime politicians, otherwise we would have a king, queen or dictator. Think about it! You are your own worst enemy when you vote down party lines.

Chase started by not honering the interest rates on my WAMU cards then reduced limits each time I paid down or canceled the card after I had a zero bal. My wife lost her hospital ins last winter then had to have (3) emergency brain ops. I charged up 22.000 on my chase card for procedures then got a bill from hospital& drs for 500.000. We are retired and on SS now HELLO CHASE? Chapter 7 Bankrupcy. Shove it you and the Hospital!

They were canceling cards on a couple of my friends so I did a nono. I over paid them by $75.00 so I was sent a letter telling me that I owed them money. I sent them a bill charging them 25% interest on the money they owed me. I have a snmall business and can send them a bill. I then refused part of their payment they sent me a check for $58.00 they deducted the processing fee for the check issued to me from the original amount owed to me. It has cost them to correct their problem. My acc. is closed and at this time I could care less about the money. I feel sorry for those taken to the cleaners by the raising of interest rates on honest hard working people accounts. It is just like our own lives. If we do not have the money we have to quite spending but our government just barrows more and we end up with companies that are greedy and run just for the numbers and not the people just like our government seems to be run today.

If you read the comments above, Chase sounds like the big evil monster trying to wipe out the Americans financially. Nothing could be farther than the truth. We Americans have been exporting our jobs overseas, spend and consume more than we earn, stop producing goods - everyone is selling hamburgers to each other-, save very little and borrow to finance our consumption. This has been going on for 20 years. We proudly point out that our thirteen trillion dollar economy is 70% consumption based. Well, do you really believe this can go on forever!!! You have to pay the Piper sometime. Maybe Chase looks like the Piper.

It is unfortunate; I went through the same path with Chase. Here is the catch: there is a woman in charge! Can you smell the fish all over?

Ha! That happened to me too! I have 2 chase cards (Paid in full) and HAD 2 WaMu cards (also paid in full) I used to have a large balance on all of them but paid it all off (whew!) Then Chase cancelled both WaMu cards, and increased the limit on the Chase rewards card. Go figure! I use Amex for rewards now & pay in full each month. I can do without all of them! Their loss, not mine!

"Tricks And Treachery Are The Practice Of Fools, That Don't Have Brains Enough To Be Honest."
Benjamin Franklin, Founding Father

The banking whores and members of our govt are to blame for the credit meltdown. When are Americans going to wake up and smell the shit??

We voted these bozos into office and now have to suffer the consequences. Corporations control the world and U.S Govt, duh!!! We get what we voted for. The only real change would be to pull all liquid accounts from banks like Chase and "skank of America" and watch them collapse. They should have failed for their mistakes, but no, pussy Obama now sleeps with the "enemy" and does their bidding in raping and pillaging our Treasury and Social Security funds so that coporate American can live high of the pork and fat of the taxpayers.

We as a people can topple a giant. PULL YOUR MONEY OUT OUT OF THE BIG BANKS, go local, credit union, etc... at least they treat their customers with respect and not as an inconvenienc.

To hell with BofA, Chase, Citibank, etc...let the whores fall. Or we will be slaves to a fascist regime.

America needs to stop pussy footing around and take back our country from the destroyers!!!!!!!

Credit Scores! Credit Scores! OMG! You have to have a good credit score or your ruined! Good Grief! This is nothing more than scare tatics to charge more and more for thier services! Tired of getting raped? Then live within your means and tell the blood suckers to got to hell where they belong!Don't allow yourself to be another victim of the credit scam! You can survive without being in debt.

Chase is the dumbest bank and ranks along with BOA.

look, people, wake up, already!

WHEN SOMEONE OFFERS YOU SOMETHING, IT IS TO THIER ADVANTAGE TO DO SO. NOT YOURS!!

WEHN SOMEONE WANTS TO GIVE YOU SOMETHING, FREE, THERE IS A COST TO IT. AND GUESS WHO PAYS IT, YOU DO!!

NOTHING IS AS GOOD OR AS WONDERFUL OR AS CONVENIENT AS THEY MIGHT SAY. THAT IS WHAT ADVERTISING IS FOR. A WAY TO CONVINCE YOU OF SOMETHING THAT DOESN'T MAKE A LOT OF SENSE, IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT.

I DON'T WANT ANYTHING THAT IS FREE. IT IS JUST A SNEAKY ATTACK ON MY WALLET, SOME HOW OR ANOTHER. AND ONCE THEY GET YOUR CONFIDENCE, WHEN YOU ARE LULLED INTO NOT THINKING ABOUT IT ANYMORE, THE ATTACK IS LAUNCHED. THE GAMES REALLY START, AND YOU ARE STUCK.

AS WITH DRUGS, JUST SAY "NO, NO, NO!!!!! I DON'T WANT TO GET HOOKED AND HAVE MY LIFE RUINED. BUT THANKS FOR ASKING. BYE-BYE"

CREDIT IS LIKE A DRUG. AND TREAT EACH OF THEM AS IF THEY ARE THE SAME THING. AVOID IT, DON'T USE IT, AND JUST SAY "NO".

AND LIFE CAN BE A PLEASANT, IF YOU'RE NOT ADDICTED.

BUT GET MIXED UP IN IT, GET ADDICTED, AND IT TURNS INTO HELL ON EARTH. LOOK ALL AROUND YOU. DON'T FALL INTO THE TRAP. DON'T TAKE THE BAIT. DON'T LISTEN TO THE SALES PITCHES.

LIVE LIKE YOUR GREAT-GRAND PARENTS (THE SAME FOODS, USE OF MONEY, VALUES) DID, AND LIFE REALLY ISN'T COMPLICATED. AND ACTUALLY PRETTY FUN.

as my wise father said, "use the old plan, 100% DOWN, ZERO MONTHLY PAYMENTS". and it makes life so much easier. and you don't have to worry about what is in the mail or if the mail got lost or misdelivered. and you don't have to play the games the card companies make you play.

after i went to all cash, IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE CASH, YOU DON'T REALLY NEED IT, life go so much better. and easier. it took a few weeks but after that, it became one of the best plans i ever used.

TRY IT AND YOU WILL SEE. STOP PLAYING THE GAME ON THEIR TERMS. USE CASH AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SMILE AGAIN, AND SLEEP BETTER AT NIGHT.

AND LEARN TO SAY, "NO, I CAN'T AFFORD THAT" OR "I REALLY DON'T NEED/WANT THAT, BUT THANKS ANYWAY.

AFTER ALL, IT IS ONLY THE MONEY ALL THESE COMPANIES WANT FROM YOU. THEY CERTAINLY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU IN ANY WAY OTHER THAN TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN GET OUT OF YOU POCKETS! THE HELL WITH THEM. MY MONEY LOOKS SO MUCH NICER IN MY POCKET THAN IT DOES IN THEIRS! DON'T YOU THINK?

I was with Wamu for 5 years before Chase took over. I never had a late payment and always kept my balance reasonably low on my credit card. When I recieved a letter informing me my interest rate was jumping from 8.9% to 19.9% I was livid, needless to say! I don't care about the impact on my credit score, I closed my account and paid it off through my State Employee CU account (which still has a 4.9% interest rate). I had a bad feeling about Chase and their business practices, which was confirmed. I highly suggest everyone who banks with Chase find a nice local NON PROFIT Credit Union and screw these money grubbing jerks out of every dollar they would have sucked out of you.

I don't know why we would expect the banking industry to do the right thing by us consumers. After all, it was only our money that bailed them out.

When "you" borrow money from someone else, "YOU" are at their mercy. I fear America is going to find out exactly what having someone YOU owe money to is going to suck... just as soon as China decides it wants all the money we owe them. How many of y'all realize that there was a time that credit was a rare thing. Everybody lived pretty much lived on cash. Since the rise of CREDIT the price of everything has gone through the roof, and keeps on rising and it will until the really big bubble bursts. I'm ready, are you?

I was also shocked by chase after having WAMU closing my account with such ridiculous excuse Always pay double amount of payment. Thanks Chase you actually did my a favor. To all the other readers these are some of the same people being bailed out with our tax dollars in one form or another.

SAME HERE.....WAMU customer w/ card for 8 years...never missed a payment..never over my limit. CHASE moved my interest rate from 4.9% to 39.99%. Told CHASE to place the card somewhere warm....sent them a check and canceled the card.! CHASE is the worse to deal with also.

I had a card through a different bank that Chase gobbled up a couple of years ago. I had a larger balance at a really low rate, fixed for the life of the balance. So a couple of months ago I get the notice from Chase, who has had the account for about 2 yrs now, that they were moving my min payment from 2 to 5 percent. Ok, so I can rearrange things and make the 5percent payment, but what about all the other people who are REALLY struggling? It would make me tempeted to just not pay it at all. I'm hurting myself. I'm a single mom, paying a mortage by myself. My ex lost his job so I get minimal child support. Luckily I have a good job with understanding people. I can make my payments, but my money was tight and is even tighter now. If anyone else does this to me, it would push me over the edge and I may just say heck with my credit score, I'll quit paying all my credit cards. I already have my house. With all the money I save each month not paying credit cards, I could pay cash for everything, including a new car and I would save a lot in the bank. I sometimes wonder how important my credit score really is anymore. I could go 7 years with crappy credit.
Anyway, I'm not at that point yet, but I'm getting fed up with being jerked around. My card account wasn't closed. They did give me the option to opt out of the 5 percent payments, but then they said I would have to pay a higher interest rate. How they can do that really is beyond me. So, I am making my higher payments, only making one small charge a month to keep it active and then when the balance gets really low, I will make one big payment to get rid of them.

Chase stinks. I used to work there. They had a class action suit because they worked people more then they should and didn't pay them. They really stinks. It was the worst place I ever worked. I have worked for another bank for 4 years and I LOVE it here. I love the people and the bank itself. It is a much better atmosphere.

Anyway, I feel for the people who have to pay 5 percent and were struggling at 2 percent. Then they can't make their payments so they raise the rates even higher and charge them late fees. Your credit stinks and your life is ruined. I don't see why they can't work with people. These are hard times, people want to pay and they won't work with them. So when everyone quits paying them, Maybe then they will decide to work with the customers.

This is the meaning of having a credit card or doing any banking with Chase. I have a medium to low balance on mu credit card. I always pay 3 to 4 times the minimum and still had my rates move to 20 % interest rate. I called and complained and they said to me well we made a lot of risky move and are losing millions of dollars we have to recover this somehow.
F - - - Chase as soon as I can I’m moving on.

Gus / Miami Fl

I was a former WAMU holder paying off the balance had $ 1200 paying it $ 100 monthy, chase contacted my former employer found out i was no longer employed with them and raised my interest rate from 9.99% to 29.99% as they put it i was a bad credit risk since i was unemployed, missed a payment how that happen i don't know had signed up for automatic monthly payments first 3 months no problem , 4th month they not get a payment , 5th month and 6th months they get payments , but day after 4th payment missed they raised the interest rate to 39.99%. They shafted me then i got them back when i had to declare bankruptcy because of them and HBSC trying to take more money then they was supposed to monthly. Unemployment checks are only so much and they wanted miore $$$$$ then what i had, i didn't even have enough money to eat more then a loaf of bread for 1 week's worth of meals, just bread & water for a week.

I my self had a Chase Credit Card. I have had it for 3 years and was over my limit once ($300.00 limit i might add). I tooo received a letter from chase saying they had closed my card for "Econimic Reasons". I limit in my Dillards and J C penney cards has a higher limit then my Chase card. OH , by the way, I am a WaMu employee now employed by CHASE!!

In a previous problem I had with MBNA, I got fed up enough to put my complaints in writing and copied the Comptroller of Curreny, who regulates national banks. I know that my letter had an impact with MBNA and some of their deceptive practices. The comptroller website is http://www.occ.treas.gov/customer.htm . The more the regulators hear of the abuses going on the sooner the banking watchdogs might take some action or atleast put some pressure on these modern day robber barons.

closed my cc account with no warning ... never missed a payment, was using to build up my credit. I am now struggling and STILL paying off my balance which now "delinquent" because it has been forced on me and is ruining my credit.

This is legal? Really?

I never missed a payment on my card. 6 months prior my credit line was extended because of my good history with the card. And without warning, the card was canceled, just like the gentleman in this story on the 14th. No warning, I actually found out when trying to rent a car for a business trip and was embarassed when I got declined on site. I closed my savings and checking account with Chase the following day.

Thank the good one that I no longer have Chase as my mortgage carrier -- they STUNK then and STINK now! Rotten scoundrels. Hope everyone drops them. Too bad about WAMU as they were a decent banking entity. Bad Chase....Bad Chase.

You have to understand one basic fact: banks DO NOT care about you or your business. If you do not like a banks performance close your accounts and move. Your credit score will recover. WaMu was one of the main offenders in the credit crisis and is directly responsible for the current recession. Good riddance. Their customer service was incompetant and criminal.

I was never late. Not dumped but my APR for no reason went from 11.99 to 12.94 and after one late payment which they stated was there fault went to 29.99!! Guess what Chase! You low life stealinig bastards!! Not paying you a dime now!!!! Yeah. Card was closed tonight....

It's not just WAMU customers, and they are not targeting specific people, they are nailing everybody. We have great credit (score = 769) and make over $200K/yr. I HAD a credit line with them of $330K, and have always paid on time and over doubble the minimum payment. I got a letter from Chase saying they were ruducing my line to $232K. Then another letter saying that I could no longer borrow against the line at all, even though I only owe $217K. Unfortunately the interst is so low (2.5%) and i need the writeoff, I need to hang on to this until I can find something comparable. As soon as I do, I'm dumping Chase. It seems to me they are cutting off their nose to spite their face. I can't wait to dunp them!

CHASELOVES THE TARP MONEY, BUT HATES HATES HATES THAT THE GOVERNMENT MADE THEM AGREE TO CREDIT CARD REFORM (THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST REFORMS I HAVE SEEN-TOO BAD IT WON'T TAKE EFFECT UNTIL 2/2010) AND TAKE ON WAMU'S "DEADBEAT" CUSTOMERS (I WAS ONE OF THOSE CUSTOMERS BEFORE I CANCELED MY $15K IN CREDIT CARDS WITH THEM-BELIEVE ME ITS BETTER TO TAKE A LITTLE DING ON YOUR CREDIT SCORE THAN TO DEAL WITH THOSE CRIMINALS AT CHASE). IF YOUR INTERESTED IN MY STORY AND HOW CHASE DEFRAUDED ME OUT OF $800 FROM MAY-JULY 2009 READ ON.
I BORROWED $10K AT 1% INTEREST BACK IN DECEMBER 2008 FROM WAMU. I MADE ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS AT THEIR WEBSITE WITHOUT A PROBLEM.. I SCHEDULED A PAYMENT FOR MARCH AT WAMU. CHASE TOOK OVER IN MARCH. MY SCHEDULED PAYMENT WAS RETURNED BY CHASE. CHASE CALLED ME AND HAD ALL THE CORRECT INFORMATION (ROUTING NUMBER, ACCOUNT NUMBER, CORRECT PAYMENT DATE) AND THERE WERE PLENTY OF FUNDS IN THE ACCOUNT. CHASE SAID THE PAYMENT WAS RETURNED AGAIN. I'VE MADE PLENTY OF ELECTRONIC PAYMENTS TO PLENTY OF CREDITORS FROM THIS ACCOUNT WITHOUT ANY TROUBLE. ANYHOW, I USED ANOTHER ACCOUNT TO PAY THEM. CHASE CHARGED ME A $39 LATE FEE AND A $39 RETURNED CHECK FEE. I CALLED CHASE FOR TWO HOURS AND GOT THEM TO REVERSE THESE FEES. KNOWING THEY COULD INCREASE MY FINANCE CHARGE FOR BEING EVEN ONE DAY LATE AND NOT TRUSTING CHASE, I CLOSELY MONITORED MY ACCOUNT IN APRIL AND MAY. EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE. IN JUNE CHASE DECIDED THEY WERE RIGHT ALL ALONG (EVEN THOUGH THEY ADMITTED I WASN'T LATE) AND RETROACTIVELY CHANGED MY FINANCE CHARGES FOR APRIL, MAY, AND JUNE INCREASING THEM OVER $200/MO (BASED ON MY NEW APR OF 29.99%).
CHASE WON'T EVEN TALK TO ME. THANKS TO THEIR ARBITRATION CLAUSE, I CAN'T SUE THEM. I AM NOT GOING TO PAY SOME ARBITOR OR WASTE THE TIME GOING THERE SO THEY CAN RULE AGAINST ME (NUMEROUS STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THE ARBITORS ARE IN THE HIP POCKET OF THE CREDIT CARDS AND RULE IN THEIR FAVOR 94-98% OF THE TIME.) SO THERE YOU HAVE IT.

Why don't we join forces and start a lawsuit against Chase, let's give them some of their own soup.

I was a WAMU customer for three years and had a 900. 00 balance e on a 5500.00 line. It was closed on me and then they turned around and upped my interest rate from 13.9 fixed to 24.99 var. This really hurts. DO we not have a class action lawsuit against this company or what? This is wrong business practice and they did nothing but hurt the people they want as customers. I really feel once again by the banking system as being violated taken advantage of. And in this case my card closure letter has also never been received here by me either like many others.

We have the same issues with Chase...Glad we are not alone...thought I was in the wrong...was told by rep of Chase and Experian that households of $200,000 were given rights and others that were under that amount was canceled....Middle class ....where are we.

My husband's and my card from WaMu Chase has also been canceled... given the same run-a-round by their rep and a phone call to Experian..the rep told me that thay were canceling all cards thats the households that were not making $200,000 a year...Give me a break. The middle Income family no longer exists...We were trying to make more than the required payments, never late on any of our bilss, Thank God, and for what...Now we are no longer...Build your credit does not work no longer....No one to blame but ourselves in believing in a system gone wrong....We must find the right people to correct our instutions and The United States of America again to where we are proud.

A telephone rep actually told me that the reason for the cancellation was that Chase was closing high risk accounts from WAMU. When asked how he thought an income of $100k+ was high risk he indicated the based on the credit score, high balance and frequency of use was they were looking at. So if you are trying not to go credit card happy for a while and trying to pay down your debt over time don't just make the min. payment and don't stop using your card!!!!

As every one above I was a victim as well. I did not find out my card was cancelled until I was 600 miles away from home on a business trip when I tried to use it. What made this worse is I only carry one card with me when I go on these trips so I was stranded in Knoxville TN. When I called they said there is no way they could help me out. They cancelled it on the July 14th but I did not receive my letter until July 28th. How about a phone call? The response from them was they do not have the resources for that. My response was somebody sure the hell has the time to put them in cancelations in envelopes.

Why are you American Sheep still using credit cards? I've noticed you American Sheep will stop by Star Bucks daily and cut coupons but continue to bank. How much abuse does it take for you to close bank your accounts, take charge of your life and go cash only?
God help these poor American Sheep!

I am another unhappy customer of Chase/WAMU whose credit card was cancelled due to no fault of mine. I will try to send this Sen. John McCain, and the White House. Something needs to be done. I hope they will.

I was a customer of WaMu prior to the buy out of J.P. Morgan Chase bank. The account from Chase was my main line of credit with a maximun balance of $6000.00. I actively used the card for home repairs, vacations, parochial school, etc. Through out my time with WaMu/Chase (over a year), I considered myself a good customer with a perfect history with the company. I never missed or made partial payments, I paid more than the minimum most months, and was an all around responsible card carrier. Further more, my credit score improved over the past year and I had not a single negative hit on my Experian account through out my time as a customer with Chase. So now I ask, why did I recieve a letter in the mail informing me that my card was being canceled? When I contacted Chase for answers (multiple times), I would get a "customer service" rep who redundantly read a script from a card that offered no answers as to why my account was cancelled. I was given no more information than what was already listed in the vague letter I recieved...."Average length of time since bankcard(s) opening is too short"...."Too few open accounts with time on file greater than 24 months". I tried disputing these facts with the rep, as they are not true,(I have multiple long term accounts with a large amount of credit and a zero balance), but she just kept referring me to my Experian credit report. I pulled up my current report to see if there was anything incorrect with my Experian report.....there was nothing incorrect in the report. Their reasons for cancelling my card were false as was reflected by Experian. I contacted Chase again with this new information, but all I got was the same scripted answers that they gave me in the last conversation....different operator with the same answers verbatum. When I checked the recent inquiries into my credit report, I discovered that Chase had NEVER even reviewed my credit score or history. They're basing their decision to cancel my major credit card on what's in my Experian report....BUT THEY NEVER READ IT!!!! I brought this latest info to their attention and this is the response I would recieve over and over...."Sir, if you have any questions regarding our decision to close your account, please obtain a copy of your Experian credit report." This is almost an exact quote from the letter I recieved. I am appaled that a company can do this to a good customer and then wont even have the decency to allow for a dispute, speak with a supervisor, or even answer simple questions. This whole situation would be easier to accept if chase had not lied to me about their reasons for cancelling my card. After some research on the internet, I've found that I'm not the only ex-WaMu customer that's being targeted be Chase bank. I'm among thousands of WaMu customers who recieved these cancelation letters with "WaMuclosure1" listed in the bottom left hand corner. It disgusts me that Chase can take tarp funds from tax payers, buy out smaller banks, and then disregard their new customers, who are the same tax payers giving them tarp funds, as if they're yesterdays trash!!!!Is there any way to fight this? I will be losing 6000.00 of credit which will no doubt hurt my credit score. As such, I will be forced to open a new credit account, which will hurt my credit score even further!!! So it goes for the plight of the responsible american consumer.

I honestly forgot due to a major household move, and paid the BofA credit card payment one day late. Honest, it was one day late. BofA adjusted the 14.99% interest rate to 27.99%. So I called them immediately and told them that this was so NOT OK. I told them that my monthly payment would go into an escrow account at the 14.99%. When they adjusted the interest I would bring the account up to date. So last night we get a call from some BofA account manager named Joe, who attempts to EXTORT a large payment from us. He informed us that he could not discuss the account until we made this payment. Needless to say, Joe the high ranking account manager from BANK of AMERICA did not earn his brownie points. So to Joe, and all of you high ranking account managers from BofA, DON"T BOTHER CALLING. The amreican people have had it and we refuse to be intimidated anymore.

Don't be fooled; credit unions are banks. The checks that are cleared or returned at your credit union come via a bank, like Wachovia, etc. . Credit Unions have fees too. My credit union charges $1.50 for over ten ATM withdrawals per month. This fee is not hidden. I see it clearly any month that I make over ten withdrawals in any month. You can join a credit union and bank and save there, but they are not going to automatically issue a low interest credit card or float you a low interest car loan or mortgage. Credit unions are in most cases tied to a larger bank in your vacinity and they too rely on the almighty CREDIT REPORT to check your credit worthiness. In some cases a credit union can be a bank disguised in sheeps clothing. Be careful.

Forget the credit unions too! TruWest Credit Union recently sent out a notice that as of August 31st, they are changing their VISA Platinum terms from fixed to variable and applying the change to existing balances. Therefore the change applys even if you close your account. There is no opt out option! At least the Chase kept the terms the same if you closed the account. I never thought I would see a CU adopt the predatory practices of the commerical banks. Both companies while doing nothing illegal have violated the spirit of the recently passed law that is effective in February 2010. This law forbids these types of predatory practices. Call me very disappointed.

I had so many nightmares with Chase (remember the old site chasemanhattensucks.com that was closed down?) that the MINUTE I heard Chase bought WAMU, I closed my account, paid it off, and signed up with M&T.

If Chase were the last available credit card on earth, I would prefer slitting my wrists to having one of their cards in my wallet.

Chase....where do you want to go today? My answer is hell you losers.....

I was actually thinking about this article and all the folks who posted comments while driving today, and I started fantasizing about the national holiday we could establish if in one fell swoop banks like JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America's records could be destroyed. In other words our accounts could be hacked into and erased. Backups too. Or they just folded because we all decided not to pay them and they really did go bankrupt. Our national holiday would be similar to Bastille Day. It would be a real American holiday that everyone could enjoy! The day we took back our lives.

The same thing happened with my old Wamu account. I had the card for about 3 years, I paid the balance off in full over the winter and after that the only amount that was charged to the account was a reoccurring $24 per month charge (which obviously I paid off every month). My husband and I went to NY and I tried to charge the room and to my surprise they told me my credit card had been declined. My first thought was it had to be identity theft because I had a $3,300 limit with only $24 charged…. Upon calling them I was informed that my account had been closed. I was never late with my payments to Wamu or Chase, and when I did carry a balance on the car I always paid well above the minimum payment. I was told to talk to Experian as well because of my credit report… I looked at my credit report and there had been no change. Since that was my only CC I applied for another one…. now I get to start from the ground up again. Oh, and on a final note… this alleged letter they sent me to let me know my account was closed on 7/21 is still MIA.

Chase is horrible. I had a credit card through them years ago, and they erroneously reported a late payment to Equifax. I called them to correct it and they said they would, but never did. I asked, in writing, several times, but no correction. I finally contacted an attorney and filed suit against them and Equifax under the FCRA laws. Chase settled out of court for a significant amount in damages. I vowed never to use them again and am not surprised in the least that they are screwing their customers. Go with a credit union, JP Morgan/Chase can rot.

For all of us (I am a WAMUClosure1 victim as well)I suggest a boycott of all Chase business. If you have any accounts there, close them. My wife, and I have already done so. Actually we left $0.01 in each account so Chase would have to continue to service them. Hope it costs them money.

Tell all your friends, and family your story, and get them to close any accounts they have with Chase as well.

It's time for consumers to show their real power.

JG

I'm a wamuclosure1 victim, as well. At first, I was po'd. About 24 hrs into it, I realized they probably did me a favor.

I have both a Chase and Wamu card. I have been 100% constant in paying 8-10 times the min payment and never got over 50% of available credit. The Chase account had an interest rate hike in January (for no reason) and the Wamu account was closed exactly like the other posts above. I'm going to pay off the WaMu balance within two months and channel funds into my MM account with the local credit union.

My only complaint is that while Chase had no reason to close my WaMu account, my credit score is going to take a hit. I've been searching the internet to find a way of preventing that from happening. I can provide solid proof on consistency...the SHOULD count as something, right?

So, is anyone in the government listening to all of this? (I previously commented on this on Friday) Does it really matter if we comment? Does it just make us all feel better to know that we're not alone. Probably. Most of us have our hands tied and are at the mercy of Chase. They've closed our accounts and pretty much can do anything they want with our interest rates at any time that they want. I'm sending this page to the Obama Administration. Maybe everyone should do the same and bombard them. Don't get me wrong, I support our current administration. Please do something Washington!!

I had a $0 balance on my card, no negative reports on my credit report and my Wa-Mu issued card was still closed by Chase.

I guess what this is the banks way of hitting back at consumers for Congress passing laws they don't like.

If you REALLY want to get away from banks, join a credit union. Some have free on-line banking with bill-pay, free checking, car loans, mortgages, credit cards, ... And, deposits are federally insured. YOU become part owner when you join – one person one vote. No fat cat at the top getting rich.

I've had a Chase card for decades that is a United Airlines mileage card I got back in the late 80s. I have automatic payments and am never late. Chase still increased my minimum payment from 2% to 5%. Because of my high balance my payment is going from roughly $500 per month to $1,200. One would think they are trying to force customers into default rates.

People keep mentioning a class action suit.

Unfortunately, there is no law against a Bank being unethical and, as of today, no law against a bank like Chase Bank performing FICO assassinations on its own customers with these WaMuClosure1 letters.

But...there are repercussions that can be levied if the controlling officers of a financial institution do something unethical that causes their stock to tank.

Like if they did something that made the public outraged and all of a sudden the masses started closing all of their Checking, Savings, IRA, Credit Card and other accounts...

Get the drift here?
If you want action against these crooks, you will first have to get off your duff, make the move and start telling everyone you know to do the same.

If you do nothing they will get away with this and laugh all the way to the bank
(Wait a minute; they are the bank! So I guess they will just laugh.)

Chase is not the only credit card company doing this. Since congress passed the new rules for the credit card company but didn't make it go into effect until 2010 they are giving the credit card companies the time to do all the damage they want before it goes into effect.

I have a couple other credit cards that I paid off and they raised my interest rate to 27% and lowered my credit limit. I will not cancel these cards but I won't be using them either.

I have a credit card from a furniture store which I used to buy a living room set. The offer was 2 1/2 years no payments no interest. So instead of paying the credit card I put what I would have paid on the card each month in a savings account. When the 2 1/2 years were up I paid the entire balance on the credit card. Therefore not having to pay any interest whatsoever. The credit card company promptly reduced my credit limit from $5000 to $800. I am sure they were mad because they thought they were going to get to add all the accrued interest on to my balance.

I used Chase for a couple of years until they tried that interest rate hike on me so I dropped them.

See people, this is what happens when you play the game and they STILL will screw you over in the end.

The only thing I have left is a Mortgage with Chase through a VA loan and they can't screw with it because it is a binding contract and believe me I'm sure they have lawyers going over it with a fine tooth comb to see if they can.

If this smoke clears and your looking for someone to blame, look in the mirror.

I own my two cars because I paid cash. I own all my items that are in my home. I have no debt other than the Mortgage and my living expenses.

As well, somehow against the people protest they still passed the Tarp bill, maybe you should have protest a litttle more.

Now, your Tax dollars are supporting Chase and others so they can turn around and charge you 25% or more to borrow YOUR own money. I guess we deserve everything we are getting handed to us.

God bless America.

If chasebanksucks.com wasn't already a website, I would have bought it and started my own "I hate chase" fan club!

Check out the attached blog http://americaforfairbanking.blogspot.com/
I started it because of the outrageously bad service I got from Chase that has cost me thousands of dollars. Vote for the ugliest banks and the best banks and then pass it on. Would welcome more comments and contributors.

Just like so many others I had a Wa Mu card. Two weeks ago I went to make a small purchase, my card was declined. Turns out Chase had lowered my credit line 50%. I called them and was told the reduction was due to a recent Experian report. I requested a copy from Experian which I am looking at right now. This 10 page report has now fewer than 15 errors plus no Employment history for the past 10 years and no mention whatsoever of my home mortgage history which is not only perfect but, as you would expect, my oldest and most complete credit reference. It also lists me as a construction worker, which I have never been, lists home addresses where I've never lived, and doesn't give my credit score. That you have to pay for. This whole FICO issue is crap. The system is just another way to initiate fees and raise interest rates. I only used the card to complete a bathroom renovation project while I was on vacation. I'll pay it off soon and NEVER use it again. I will not likely use any credit cards again until and unless our government gets serious about these abuses.

I work for a large credit union; used to work for Citibank. Take it from me, nobody who qualifies to join an NCUA affiliated credit union needs to do business with these large banks. Credit unions offer savings, checking, credit cards, loans & mortgages, CD, IRAs, online banking with billpay, etc, all without the predatory practices and gotchas. And Janet has a point about keeping credit card accounts open out of fear of dinging your credit score. I closed longstanding accounts with Citi & Chase, opened new ones with 2 credit unions that I pay off every month and my credit score is still over 900. FYI - The credit union I work for has no default rates on their credit card accounts - period.

I got the stupid Chase form letter this afternoon, telling me that my acct was being cancelled due to my Experian report. Bull! I think they cancelled my acct because I pay me balance off each month. And for the people that say we're "living above our means" because we have credit cards, go jump in a lake! I'm obviously not living above my means if I'm paying off the balance IN FULL each month, genius!

When Chase took over, the first thing they did was lower my credit limit to less than my current balance and started imposing 29% finance charges. I was being dinged for being over limit, and soon my payments weren't even meeting finance/overage fees. Then they added on late fees. A $1200 balance (on a card with originally a $2500 limit that was lowered to $1000 limit) has now escalated to over $3000. The minimum amount they want is more than my monthly mortgage. I finally stopped paying after they refused to negotiate and will just suck it up when they finally send it to collections.

Chase cards have been a blessing for us. Over the past three years we got about $1500 in rewards and have not pay a single dime in fees nor interest. GO CHASE

I was told I closed the account in a letter, something I never did. I was extremely confused when I called and the service rep was not allowed to give me an answer.

Everyone is upset with the banks and credit card companies. Want to get back at them? Pay CASH for your purchases!! You don't have to carry around thousands of dollars, but pay cash for the everyday items you buy. Most places do accept cash!

I spent about two weeks going back and forth with Chase about four months ago regarding a sudden rate increase to 27%. Initially they told me it was for a late payment, there wasn't one and I even had a representative confirm in writing so I had a record of the error. It went up through three levels of management before I received a note back saying there was nothing they could do. The reason they raised it was bogus and yet in the end they didn't change it.

As of today I am a "wamuclosure1" victim, almost puts a smile on my face since I've been receiving communications over the last few months stating Chase will always be there for me. I will make absolutely sure my personal accounts and my business accounts stay away from Chase. I purposefully didn't have them linked but as a decision maker in my organization I cannot stand behind a company with these kinds of practices.

I have recently been caught up in a downward credit spiral with one lender lowering my available credit which in turn impacted my score and triggered others to do the same. Now my score is in the basement and the mortgage refinance I was working on is now off the table and I have no other options.

I am surprised at the number of people defending Chase's practice of raising one's interest rate for no reason (aside from the extra profit) and closing accounts with no change in credit. On top of that in a number of cases no actual pull on Experian was done even though the letters state that is the reason why it was closed.

These practices are at a minimum poor ethics and possibly illegal in some cases so the promises Chase makes to do the right thing are definitely hollow and those defending them are simply feeding the mindset that it is alright to conduct business in such a poor fashion.

Same crap here-
Never missed a payment, until I changed to Chase's "banking online convenience" a year and a half ago. Scheduled payment directly from an account at my bank to Chase, started getting $39 dings every month. I was told the electronic payments take 5 days to clear- that's longer than a check from my bank to them. They took back those charges, but told me to schedule the payments earlier. Why? So they could hold my money another 4-5 days worth of interest? E- transfers are instantaneous. Then, out of the blue, my rate went from 6.9 to 29.9, and they cited repeated lates as the reason. Paid them in full, (a whole total of $241.22) well ahead of the due date, and the next month I get another notice the next month that I owe them $33 because of another late fee and accumulated interest. They've been sucking on that for the last year, and they'll never get another dime from me. I informed all of the reporting agencies of my status, as well as my State Attorney General's office, and none of this is showing up.

People, don't you realize that individually issued credit cards don't matter a bit to Chase?? They are the issuer of choice for credit cards by the largest internet retailer of all times..........Amazon.com. If you want to make yourselves heard, voice your opinion to Amazon and ask that they shift their priority to another card issuer!!

This is why I exclusively pay cash. I am willing to drive to my utility companies each month and pay my bills in person and maintain a savings-only account with a credit union to avoid getting thoroughly jewed by a credit company or bank. So far, so good.

I have (had) two Wamu checking accounts, one Wamu credit card and one Chase credit card. Chase did close my former Wamu card with about a 50/50 credit/balance ratio but I'm not worried about it a bit and so far I haven't had any problems from Chase. My Chase card is still active.

Ever since the day Chase took over I dread having to come to the bank. Service is rediculous and hopeless. And now they go and tell other customers what they can or cannot purchase.. Its like getting into my wallet and telling me I can't spend anymore. They issued the card but they dont own it. Amazon steels book...Chase now controls our money spending....Who gave them these rights?

I had an account with Chase for years after they bought out WAMU cards.. I was always on time with my payment and most always sent more than was due. One month I sent them $75 including the extra for principle and the very next month, they cut my limit, raised my payment due to $298 and my interest monthly was $171. Talking to them brought no resolution so before I knew it, my limit was reached and passed as I could not afford to make them. Then I was turned into collections and another strike on my already poor credit rating. I think it is sad after a government bailout that they can treat people this way.

We have had numerous problems with Chase over the years. We pay our balance every month. Several months ago, my husband discovers that we were hit with a late payment fee and realized the reason for this is that they changed out billing cycle with no notice. This resulted not only in the late payment fee but then they raised our interest rate because of "late payment history" (one time a history makes, I guess). The latest issue is the "letter" on my Providian/WaMu/Chase card. They decreased my limit from $10,000 to $3,000. Luckily we had paid it off and did not carry a balance, but it is more the fact that they said it was due to our Experian Credit Report. We check our credit reports frequently and there has been no change except an increase in our FICO score over the past 5 years. If my credit report is so bad that they have to lower my credit limit, then why do they keep sending me credit card offers even though I already have 2 of their stinking cards anyway?

I received my new Chase credit card to replace my old WAMU card and the letter telling me my account has been closed for some BS reason on the same day! I wasn't a Chase customer before this, and now I will never be Chase customer EVER!

mI too had the same problem I had Providian for about 10 years they would increase my bal because I always payed over the minimun on time ! Then I was changed to Wamu and they were greaat then Chase . They sent no letter at first and left me standing in line in the store with denied credit card , how embarrassing. I payed one acct off totally and they still closed it . I don't think this right and don't understand how they got away with it.

Just got my letter today. Had 2 WaMu/Chase cards, same story, never late, always more than minimum, etc. One card had a zero balance on it. I was informed today that Chase has closed it. Some garbage about Experian and such... same crap. I am going to try to find a website for complaints.

I was a Providian, WaMu and then Chase cardholder. I also had a separate Chase card which I used rarely and always had the balance paid off. I have excellent credit. They sent me a notice cancelling my chase card for no reason (probably because I always kept it paid off and paid ontime!)They haven't cancelled my WaMu card yet but have raised the interest rates substantially even though I'm never late with payments. Thankfully I don't have a balance on it and dont plan to be doing any business with them now.

Alejandro Rodriguez I hate to say this but you need to take a class in economics and ethics: You talk about accountability for their actions, what about your personal responsibility, basically you are upset because your bank canceled your credit card so you think that this gives you justification to stiff them for pennies on the dollar for all the debt that you charged up using their money prior to them canceling you card. So who exactly is the party suffering from injustice?

In your post you state:
“The more Non Performing Loans they have to on the balance sheet and the more Write Downs they have to take, translates into more reserves they will have to set aside; which means the less money they will have for lending which equals less profit. Less profitability means unhappy stock analyst and lower stock prices.”

What you have described there is exactly one of the prime examples of why we are in our current economic crash. People getting loans they cant afford, spending beyond their means and then stiffing the banks.

What our society needs to do is to turn away from the thinking process that you can spend more then you earn and can afford and that getting credit is a privilege that you have to earn and pay for (in the form of interest on a loan)

Almost 3 years ago my husband decided we should refinance our home and take out some of the equity. He went to Bank One - right before they merged with Chase - for the refinance. They were going to give him this really great deal - pay off his 0% car financing, include his 3 credit cards, and give him some of the equity out of the house. All at 9% interest with enough closing costs and fees to finance a small country. I almost did not pay any attention and told him to do whatever he wanted. Fortunately, I looked over the paper work and kept adding and re-adding the figures. Somewhere in all the pages of figures, between the cash out amount and all of the fees, there was a $35,000 discrepancy. Needless to say, we did not go through with this. We kept getting calls for the longest time asking when we wanted to complete the application.

My hen-headed little chickadees,

Here's how to reasonably deal with changes by Chase (closure is a change). Pay 10% of the balance plus the minimum until the balance is less than the original 10%. Then make a final payment. If you wish to keep the account (Chase has not closed it) continue to pay 10% of the balance etc. The series is infinite so a zero balance will never occur.

I've dealt with my main credit union (Kern Schools Fed CU) since 1965 and my secondary CU (Kern Federal CU-they hold my mortgage)since 1983. Also own stock in a major national bank. NEVER deal with a bank. ONLY deal with a credit union. Have financed two kids, three mortgages, many cars, five college degrees, ad infinitum, thru the CUs. Never deal with a bank.Even bought my bank stock with loan from CU.

I opened Wamu credit card account few years ago,I like the fact they gave you your credit score every month, then when they were bought out by CHASE (just the name itself should make you wonder) I knew I was in trouble, then they raised my interest rate by almost 4%,so i paid if off with my credit union account, saving me almost 10%apr,although I will keep the Chase account open,if they dont close it on me next(im not holding my breathe)never to pay them a dime again.

Being a former WaMu customer this was a card that I had valued and just made a $500.00 dollar payment, never behind always current but I received the same notice of cancellation. It has effected me since The WaMu card was my card of choice and hold only one other. I haven't questioned their decission until I saw this article. I know of no other options, I am not in the habit of begging companies for my business, oh well!

I have banked with chase for a number of years. When my husband lost his income and ended up in the hospital I called Chase to see if they could help me out. After all I paid for payment protector for years. Guess what. I was offered payment holliday and there where no programs in place for hardship. I was just flat out told we can't help you. After 5 months of falling behind they send me a letter that they wanted to help me out. Now it is too late.
I overdrafted my account with 48 cents and they slapped me with a 35 dollar overdraft fee. When I asked for it to be waived they said no can do. I'm closing everything with chase and definitly look for a creditunion where customer service is still customer service and not money hungry grabbing executives.

I've dealt with my main credit union (Kern Schools Fed CU)since 1965 and my secondary CU (Kern Federal CU-holds my mortgage)since 1983. Also own stock in a major national bank. NEVER deal with a bank. ONLY deal with a credit union. Have financed two kids, three mortgages, many cars, five college degrees, ad infinitum, thru the CUs.NEVER deal with a bank.

Customers should start dropping Chase. I am in the process of doing just that after they raised my interest rate for no reason when interest rates were actually dropping.

The govt taxes you; the banks charge interest. Neither seem to ever have a good reason for raising the amounts they take. Govt and banks are the enemy. It sounds like folks are willing to dump the banks; when will the folks be ready to dump the govt.

I've been with chase 17 years. I use the card for EVERYTHING (airmiles)with a $30,000. credit limit. Does not matter to me what their interest rate or minimum payment is as I NEVER carry a balance.
Some months I will charge $1,000, other months over $20,000 as it just depends what I am doing and where I am going.
I am happy with Chase and I receive good customer support when I need it. But if for some reason they cancel me it really does not matter. I will just go somewhere else.
Having a credit card is not a right. If you carry a balance it is your own fault as it is "normally" due to poor money managment.

Just another sad story for Chase, seems like they cant keep the bad customers and then they run off the good customers. My card was cancelled while on a trip two weeks agao and still havent received the letter that they said was on the way to explain the incident. They can count on my business going elsewhere.

Anybody care to talk about Capital One ? They are doing the same thing to their customers. I had a rate of 8.9% this was the rate that Capital One insisted I deserve. Last month I received a notice that my interest was being raised to 17.9% and it was a corporate decision and final. The notice went on to explain that I could cancel the card and keep the existing terms [ which I did ] As Capital Ones commercials ask "Whats in your wallet ?" For sure not Capital One.

Credit card companies do make money off people who pay their balances in full and on time. They get to keep approx 1% of what you charged for themselves. The businesses you buy from only get 99% of their money. That is why many small businesses accept debit cards but not credit cards. Only use credit cards in an emergency!

Chase sucks. I charge over $30,000 per year and pay it all off every month when the bill arrives. The past year, Chase took over from FirstUSA and then jacked up the late fees. I had a electronic bill paying problem - the money showed up a couple days late, and Chase slammed me with a $39 late fee plus interest. I hate banks like Chase. Given that I charge over $30,000 per year, Chase makes $300-600 on my transactions, without any fees. They are greedy - I'm going to go back to cash only if they will not be fair and waive the late fee. I've had it with these rats!

Wow. Chase rec'd my latest payment 1 day or 2 after the due date. I called them to ask for more lead time on due dates, and asked if they could work with me on this $39 late fee. They not only adjusted the due date, but also waived the late fee, noting that not only did I pay the balance each month, but that I'd not been late in several years. Hmmm.

I started as a Providian customer almost 20 years ago, never paid late. Then it was bought by WaMu, I never paid late with them. It switches to Chase, I make a $2000 payment on my card and pay off all of the rest of my cards (with other banks) and two weeks later I receive a letter saying I have too many revolving accounts so they've closed my account. Period. Same thing happened to my husband. They are messed up! I can't wait to get out of there completely!!

Also a WaMu to Chase customer. While out of the country on 7/8, I used my Chase card, which took my balance to just under 30% of my limit. When I returned home, I received a notice they were raising my rate from 19.99% to 26.99%. I have spent the last several years rebuilding my credit, so the interest rate didn't surprise me. I always pay more than my minimum payment, usually by about 3x, on both my Chase and other two credit cards. I decided to focus on getting the Chase card paid off since it had higher interest.

On 7/19 I made a payment of $200 on a $31 minimum payment online. No where online did it say the account had been closed. The next day I received a letter dated 7/15 that they were closing my account because of Experian report.

When I called I was told the account had been closed 7/7. When I explained I had used the card on 7/8, they said that wasn't possible. When I said the letter had been dated 7/15 they said that wasn't possible. When I asked to tell me what in the Experian report caused them to close the report, they said that wasn't possible. When I asked to speak to a supervisor they said that wasn't possible.

I promptly called my bank and found out it WAS possible for me to stop the $200 payment, which I did. I will pay off the Chase card since I am attempting to rebuild my credit, and I will continue to make more than the minimum payment, but I will never use Chase and will do everything in my power to spread the word.

Three days later my sister received the same notice regarding her WaMu to Chase card.

I agree with some other posters that credit is not a right and there is a contract, but part of that contract is that if I make my payments, follow the rules, etc., I shouldn't be punished.

This administration (and the last) have banking cronies in charge of regulating banks. They claim they are the only ones who understand the complexity of the system. (And these are guys who think so lowly of other Americans they ignore payment of their taxes. They think that only poor working class pions should really pay.) The banks own Washington! Both, think they are the "middle-class millionaires". The people should boycott Chase, BoA, Citi, AIG, and the rest. If this Administration doesn't have the courage to let them go bankrupt, maybe the "people" should do it for them. Each former card holder of Chase, should go out and tell ten family and friends to not do business with Chase. Let's see how long it take for the Administration to come running with bailout money...for $100,000,000 bonuses, to be spent on German castles!

remember the card companies make their money up front when you charge an item. every merchant (store owner) has to pay approximately 3% to 5% of the sale the credit card companies every time you charge an item!
all this intrest, late fees, etc. is pretty much all gravy!
